Lukas Exl
Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn.
Lukas Exl is Research Director, Head of the Mathematical AI/ML Division at Wolfgang Pauli Institute (WPI) and a habilitated Senior Scientist in Computational Science at the University of Vienna. His work sits at the interface of applied mathematics, computational physics, and scientific machine learning, with a focus on data-driven and reduced-order PDE modeling, physics-informed neural networks, and low-rank tensor/kernel methods for micromagnetism. He leads research projects on Data-Driven Reduced-Order Approaches in Micromagnetism and Design of Nanocomposite Magnets by Machine Learning, and has contributed to widely used micromagnetic simulation tools. His publications focus on efficient algorithms for computational magnetism that advance established numerical methods with modern machine learning.
The Wolfgang Pauli Institute (WPI) is an internationally renowned center of excellence in mathematics, computer science, physics, and materials science. It offers an open, inter-university, and interdisciplinary structure and serves as an efficient host for competitive research grants. WPI’s mission is to link high-level projects into long-term, synergistic programs and to provide a strong platform and resources for research and postgraduate education. The Math AI/ML Division unites expertise across mathematics, computational science, physics, and materials science to develop rigorously founded AI and machine-learning methods that emphasize mathematical guarantees beyond black-box approaches.
